Rock the Vote

07 Nov

Old school Death Metal flag bearers Carcass are responsible for one of the most powerful politically charged songs I have ever listened to, R**k the Vote (lyrics here). Heavy, catchy rock’n roll melody with a slight Death Metal touch, profoundly cynical and damn inspiring.

Believe the lie

The lie that you’re told

Doing fine

Just do as you’re told

Is this rock’n'roll or a form of state control?

A bit off topic, but somewhere related: the best line in recent Metal from my point of view is “I’m judge and I’m jury and I’m executioner too” from Metallica’s Dirty Window (St Anger). The funny part is that I totally hate the rest of the song :-) . From that album the title song and “Some kind of monster” are rather ok, still nothing compared to what Metallica used to produce…

    Hey, Sebi:)

I don’t actually see what is that good about that precise line without putting in in the context of the whole song. Whose quality is quite acceptable lyrics-wise.

If I we were to look only at that Metallica line I would conclude that Fear Factory did a far better job in 1995 with “H-K (Hunter Killer)” from “Demanufacture” : “I’m your judge / And your jury / You don’t get / An attorney / With my verdict / Of guilty / An execution in fury”.

In a more general context I wouldn’t know whether that line is the best or not in recent metal – by the way, how far “recent metal” stretches back in time and what is the scope of the sampling. I bet it’s far from being the best given the painfully bad level of songwriting displayed on St. Anger.
